There was nothing new in Dichter’s statement, although it was probably the clearest statement of the convoy’s intentions uttered by any source during the three weeks. That he needed to deliver it suggests the convoy’s message, in fact, was not being heard. Looking back on it, Dichter attributed the messaging problems to the grassroots nature of the movement. “If everybody stayed on the same team and on message, that narrative would have been increasingly more difficult for the mainstream media to spin,” he said.

Pawlak agreed that “people shooting off on the sides” was the major source of messaging problems, but she wished the convoy media representatives had engaged, rather than boycotted, the mainstream media to counteract this. Convoy supporters lit up when CTV reporter Glen McGregor, refused admittance to a convoy press conference, was asked by hotel management to leave the premises, but the incident did nothing to advance the convoy’s message. “The way I saw it was that, hey, they’re likely going to misrepresent this anyway, so why give them an incentive to go get their story from other sources,” said Pawlak. She thinks there would have been more to be gained with a strategy of taking media calls, “answering the questions to the best of my ability, keep telling them exactly what I’m telling you and anybody else and then just see what happens.”

Pawlak also regretted that so much time and effort were spent dealing with internal conflict in the first week, and not enough putting together a concrete, proactive media plan. Even without this, the convoy was getting results.
